Pubs of Portsmouth from Old Photographs by Ron Brown
(Amberley Publishing, 2009 ISBN 978-1-84868-723-3, £12.99)
Poor old Pompey – the city of Portsmouth has suffered more than most from the depredations of the developers and the Luftwaffe. And worst of all, hundreds of pubs which were frequented by seamen and dockworkers have disappeared or been transformed beyond recognition. Fortunately over the decades many were recorded photographically and appear here. There are some nice shots of pubs and their customers from the 1870s to the 1990s. The captions are helpful and there is a short introduction.
