Hammersmith’s best known pub is the Dove, which lies perched over the Thames near the Bridge, but the borough has hundreds of public houses (or rather had because as this book demonstrates many have closed) in which the working man and the middle classes alike slaked their thirst. Using images largely taken from the Local Studies Library, Chris Amies tells some of their stories. Inevitably many of the illustrations are post-war and for many places there is little to tell. Some of the photographs are extraordinary, particularly the shot of locals at the Dove playing the now forgotten game of bumblepuppy (a sort of miniature skittles), or a skittles match at the Black Lion.

However many are rather dull, being outside shots taken in the 1960s and 1970s, which do not reveal anything about the establishment except what it looked like. Unfortunately the reproduction of some of the pictures is poor – which might be down to the poor quality of the originals.
